Wow, sometimes you don't realize the power that Wal-Mart has until you see figures like this. It's amazing to think that this used to be the company where the slogan was "Buy America." Now, it's slogan could be "Sold America." My, how times have changed!
Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., may have to move outside the realm of retailing in the next five years as growth for its existing domestic formats shrinks, according to a new report, "Wal-Mart 2010," by Retail Forward here. “Wal-Mart will continue to push the boundaries of what its customers will allow it to be,” the report said. “It will explore new formats, categories and locations in an effort to grow market share and share-of-wallet. Between now and 2010, the company will look to parlay its low-cost, low-price approach to other businesses — quite possibly some outside the realm of retailing.” The study's other predictions: Wal-Mart sales will top $500 billion a year by 2010 (compared with approximately $284 billion in 2004, according to SN estimates); Wal-Mart will own 12% of all non-auto/non-gasoline retail sales in the United States, up from 8% currently; more than 35% of a typical consumer product manufacturer's sales will go through Wal-Mart; and 25% of Wal-Mart's sales will come from international operations (compared with SN’s estimate of 18.5% currently). “It's likely the company will make some bold moves to elevate its global presence," the report said.
