OK, I can be just as annoyed at the amount of noise that we live with every day, but come on! Telling the ice cream truck that it can't play its song? It's almost un-American! I mean, who in this country can't hum the ice cream truck song. And whether or not I'm in the mood for ice cream, I sure like hearing the song. Makes me know that summer is here. Like hearing Springsteen's Santa Claus is Coming to Town lets me know it's officially the Christmas season. Do we really want to stop the music?
Mister Softee was for once, not smiling.
James Conway Jr., whose father started what is now one of the world's largest mobile purveyors of soft serve ice cream, said Wednesday that the city's proposal to ban the company's relentlessly upbeat jingle as part of an overhaul of the Noise Code would freeze company profits.
"To get a sense of what this would do to us, remember when you were a kid: You heard the jingle, you grabbed your money, and you ran to the truck," Conway said at a City Council hearing. "The way you knew Mister Softee was in the neighborhood was the song. So without the jingle, our sales will plummet."
