Hoping for such buzz, No. 3 burger chain Wendy's made Web entertainment part of a new ad campaign announced Thursday. Growth has lagged McDonald's and a resurgent Burger King, and its last two ad campaigns fizzled.
Also on Thursday, brewer Anheuser-Busch, fighting rising consumer taste for cocktails and archrival Miller, said it has hired Gregg and Evan Spiridellis to create Web entertainment. The brothers made This Land, an animated presidential election spoof that spread across the Web to an estimated 80 million viewers.
"All viral means is that you've created a message that people want to share," says Gregg Spiridellis, who founded animation and design studio JibJab with his brother. "If people want to pass it along, that's what brand marketing is all about."
