THIS JUST IN: Thanks to Adscam for this update:
Chief Executive Steve Jobs on Thursday apologized to iPhone buyers for cutting the price tag of the 8-gigabyte model to $399, which is $200 less than at its debut on June 29. In a letter posted on the consumer electronic maker's Web site, Jobs also said that Apple plans to give a $100 credit to existing iPhone customers. "We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers," Jobs said. "We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple."
You know, just yesterday, I wrote about what a great experience I had with Apple and my broken screen. Now comes word that they dropped the price to $399! That's $200 less then what I paid for it just a few weeks ago! I guess they're hoping that I would feel like I really got two phones for $599 and it would feel like a real bargain! Jason on one of my newsgroups remarked that I should "Think of it more along the lines that you paid 200 dollars to participate in a usability study for a groundbreaking device."
So now in just six weeks I went from being a cool, early adopter with my iPhone to a guy who paid $599 for a phone that's now $399! As I character in a play a did many years ago said, "It's not right. It's just not right!"
Of course, they did add some cool new finctionality, like ring tones and the partnership with Starbuck's, but I'm not sure that's making me feel good about the $200.
With the new heat the iPhone will be getting from the iPod Touch, Apple decided to lower the barrier of entry to a much more palatable $399, and that's for the 8GB model, which just yesterday was rocking at $599 pricepoint. It also looks like Apple is doing away with the 4GB version, which was seriously lagging behind its big brother in sales, but there's no official word yet.
