i like your idea, david -- it makes more sense to me than the direction tru is currently pursuing.

while tru is right to explore ways to become more of a destination, get more volume out of its current square footage, and grow its brand footprint, the opportunity is to provide unique value-added services and/or experiences. instead of trying to compete with wal-mart et al by selling groceries (i.e., highly commoditized products), tru should carve out a differentiated space -- like the fun/play concept you've described.
